Modern bathroom with a frameless glass shower enclosure and marble walls

Glass Shower Doors

Frameless & Glass Shower Doors in Hoover and Birmingham

Custom frameless, semi-frameless and framed shower enclosures, measured to your exact opening and installed by Hankins Glass.

Glass Shower Doors

A custom glass shower, made for your bathroom

A new glass shower door can change the whole feel of a bathroom. Clear glass lets light reach every corner, shows off your tile work, and makes even a smaller hall bath feel more open than a curtain or a dated, cloudy enclosure ever could.

Hankins Glass designs and installs frameless, semi-frameless and framed shower enclosures for homes throughout Hoover, Birmingham and the surrounding area. No two showers are exactly alike, so every door and panel is measured in your home and fabricated to fit your opening, including out-of-plumb walls and sloped curbs.

If you are in the middle of a remodel, call us early. We can talk through layout and glass options while your contractor is still planning the tile, and we come back to measure once the tile is finished.

Options

Frameless, semi-frameless or framed?

All three use tempered safety glass. The differences are in the look, the thickness of the glass, and the amount of metal holding it in place.

Frameless shower doors

Heavy tempered glass held by hinges and clips with no metal frame around the edges. The cleanest, most open look and the easiest to keep clean. Frameless glass is commonly 3/8" or 1/2" thick.

Semi-frameless enclosures

Thinner glass with metal framing on some edges, often around the fixed panels, while the door itself stays frameless. A middle ground in look and budget.

Framed shower doors

Glass fully supported by a metal frame. A durable, budget-friendly option for standard tub and shower openings, including sliding tub doors.

Sliding (bypass) doors

Two panels glide past each other on a track, so no swing space is needed. A popular way to update a bathtub or a narrow shower.

Layouts we build

Common configurations include a single hinged door; a door with an inline fixed panel; a 90-degree corner enclosure with a door and return panel; neo-angle enclosures for corner showers; fixed splash panels for walk-in showers; and sliding doors for tubs. We will recommend a layout based on your opening, your curb and where the shower head and controls are.

Glass and hardware options

Choose from clear glass, low-iron glass (sometimes called ultra-clear, which removes the slight green tint visible on the edges of standard glass), and privacy glass such as frosted or patterned styles.

Hinges, handles and clips are available in finishes like chrome, brushed nickel, matte black and brushed gold, so your shower glass can match your faucets and fixtures. The project in our gallery pairs a frameless door with brushed gold hardware.

Caring for your glass shower

A quick squeegee after each shower is the single best habit for keeping glass clear, because it removes the water that leaves hard-water spots behind. Use a non-abrasive cleaner and a soft cloth or sponge, and avoid scouring pads or harsh chemicals that can scratch glass or damage hardware finishes and seals.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Have a question that isn’t answered here? Call (205) 639-9893 or send us a message.

Do frameless shower doors leak?

A well-planned frameless shower keeps water where it belongs. Door sweeps, seals and the right layout for your shower head position handle most of it. Because frameless glass has small gaps around the door so it can swing, some splash at the edges is possible if the spray points directly at the door, which is why we look at your layout before recommending a design.

How thick is frameless shower glass?

Frameless doors and panels are commonly 3/8" or 1/2" tempered glass. Semi-frameless and framed enclosures typically use thinner glass because the metal frame provides support.

When should I schedule measuring during a remodel?

After the tile and any stone curb or bench are completely installed. Glass is fabricated to exact measurements, so we measure the finished surfaces. It's still smart to call us during planning so the opening and curb work well for glass.

Can you replace my old framed door with frameless glass?

In many cases, yes. It depends on the walls, the curb and where the wall studs are for mounting hinges. We will check during the estimate and suggest the best option if a fully frameless door isn't a good fit.

Do you install shower doors outside Hoover?
