Replacement Windows

Window Replacement in Hoover, AL

Energy-efficient replacement windows for homes in Hoover, Birmingham and nearby communities, measured on site and installed cleanly.

Replacement Windows

Replacement windows built for Alabama summers

Old windows are one of the biggest sources of heat gain, drafts and outside noise in a home. In the Hoover and Birmingham area, where long, humid summers keep air conditioners running for months, worn-out windows can make some rooms hard to keep comfortable no matter where the thermostat is set.

Hankins Glass replaces tired, drafty, foggy or hard-to-operate windows with new, energy-efficient units sized to your openings. We measure every window in person, explain your options in plain language, and handle the full removal, installation, sealing and trim finish so you are not left with loose ends.

Whether you need one problem window replaced or want to update the whole house, the process starts the same way: a free in-home estimate and an honest recommendation, including telling you when a simpler glass-only repair would do the job.

Options

Window styles we install

Every home is different, so we match the window style to how each room is used and how the house looks from the street.

Double-hung windows

Both sashes slide up and down, and most tilt in for easy cleaning. A natural fit for the traditional and ranch-style homes common around Hoover, Vestavia Hills and Homewood.

Sliding windows

Sashes glide side to side with no crank or hinges. A practical choice for wide openings, basements and spots where a window has to clear a patio or walkway.

Casement windows

Hinged on one side and opened with a crank, casements seal tightly when closed and are handy over kitchen sinks and other hard-to-reach places.

Picture windows

Fixed glass with no moving parts for the biggest, clearest view and the fewest air leaks. Often paired with a transom above or operable windows on each side.

Glass packages and energy efficiency

The glass does most of the work in a modern window. Insulated (double-pane) glass traps a layer of air or gas between two panes to slow heat transfer. Low-E coatings are microscopically thin layers that reflect a large share of the sun's heat and UV while still letting light through, which helps keep south- and west-facing rooms cooler and reduces fading of floors and furniture.

When you compare windows, two numbers on the label are worth knowing. U-factor measures how well the window insulates (lower is better), and Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC) measures how much of the sun's heat gets through (lower is better in a hot climate like ours). We will walk you through the options for your home and what makes sense for each side of the house.

Where building code calls for safety glass, such as windows near doors, tubs and showers or close to the floor, we use tempered glass.

Insert vs. full-frame replacement

Many replacements are done as an insert (also called pocket replacement): the old sashes and hardware come out, and a new window is fitted into the existing frame. This keeps your interior trim and exterior siding or brick intact, which makes the job faster and less disruptive.

If the existing frame is rotted, out of square or damaged by water, a full-frame replacement removes the window down to the rough opening so the new unit can be properly flashed and sealed. We check every frame during the estimate and tell you which approach your windows need, and why.

  • You can feel drafts around closed windows or see daylight around the sash
  • Fog or condensation is trapped between the panes and won't wipe off
  • Windows stick, won't stay open, or are painted or swollen shut
  • Soft, cracked or rotted wood around the frame or sill
  • Rooms that overheat in summer or feel cold near the glass in winter
  • Rising cooling bills or noticeable outside noise from the street
  • Faded floors, rugs or furniture near sunny windows
  • Locks that no longer latch securely

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Have a question that isn’t answered here? Call (205) 639-9893 or send us a message.

Do I have to replace all of my windows at once?

No. Many homeowners start with the worst windows, such as a foggy picture window or the drafty bedrooms on the sunny side of the house, and replace the rest later. We are happy to quote one window or the whole house.

Can I just replace the foggy glass instead of the whole window?

Often, yes. If the frame and sash are in good shape, replacing only the sealed glass unit can be the more economical fix. See our foggy glass repair page, and we will tell you honestly which option makes sense during your estimate.

How long does installation take?

It depends on how many windows you are replacing and whether any need full-frame work. We will give you an expected timeline with your quote so you can plan around it.

Will new windows lower my energy bills?

Replacing leaky, single-pane or failed double-pane windows with insulated low-E glass reduces heat gain and drafts, which helps your air conditioning work less. How much you save depends on your home, the number of windows and how you use your HVAC, so we won't promise a specific number.
